HDP co-chair sentenced to 1 year in prison

Pro-PKK Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Figen Yüksekdağ, who was stripped of her deputy status after being sentenced for terrorism, was sentenced to another year in prison yesterday on grounds that she propagated terrorism.

She also became ineligible for party-political membership after the court upheld her sentence in accordance with the Turkish Constitution.

Yüksekdağ has previously drawn heavy criticism for her alleged pro-PKK stance, saying in July 2015 that "We [the HDP] support the YPJ [Women's Protection Units], the YPG [People's Protection Units] and the PYD [Democratic Union Party], and we do not see any harm in mentioning and defending this."
