The Turkish Air Force conducted an operation in northern Iraq, killing at least eight PKK terrorists, a statement said Tuesday.

According to the statement issued by the Turkish General Staff, the air force launched a counter-terrorism operation Monday after detecting the presence of terrorists in the Zap area.

It said the terrorists were plotting an assault on a military base on the Turkey-Iraq border.

Meanwhile, the security forces also killed two PKK terrorists in a southeastern province late Monday, the Governor's Office said in a statement.

According to the statement, on Monday evening gendarmes launched a counter-terrorism operation after receiving information about the PKK's presence in the central district of the Şırnak province.

Elsewhere, one PKK terrorist was killed in Turkey's southeastern Şırnak province Monday in another counter-terrorism operation, the statement added.

The PKK - listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU - resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015. Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of more than 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians.
