Two people, including one soldier, were killed and two other servicemen were injured on Saturday in a PKK attack in Turkey's southeastern Hakkari province.

PKK terrorists located in northern Iraq targeted a modular base construction in Şemdinli district with heavy weapons, including mortars and rockets.

The injured soldiers were immediately brought to the nearby Yüksekova State Hospital for medical treatment, while security forces launched an air-supported operation.

The Hakkari governorate said in a statement that a civilian construction worker was among the two killed, confirming that the remaining victims were military personnel.

The statement also underlined that a large scale operation in the region was still ongoing, while a legal investigation was also launched.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry also announced Saturday that 17 PKK terrorists were killed in counterterror operations conducted throughout Turkey over the past 24 hours.

Founded in 1978, the PKK has waged a decades-long bloody campaign against Turkey.

The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU, resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a brief reconciliation period.

Since that time, the PKK has been responsible for the deaths of some 1,200 security personnel and civilians, including women and children, while more than 4,000 security personnel and over 2,000 civilians have been injured.
