Turkish jets and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) targeted PKK positions in northern Iraq, killing eight terrorists, the military said in a statement Tuesday.

The military said that six of the terrorists were killed by jets in northern Iraq's Zap region, while two were killed by UAVs, bringing the total number of terrorists killed in Monday's anti-terror operations to 16.

Meanwhile, the military also noted that two soldiers were killed, two others were injured after PKK terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device in Zap.Military units continue to scan the area to find terrorists, the statement added.

The area is right across the Çukurca district of Turkey's southeastern Hakkari province.

PKK uses the mountainous area in northern Iraq to group and conduct attacks inside Turkish territory.

Founded in 1978, the PKK has waged a decades-long bloody campaign against Turkey.

The group, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU, resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a brief reconciliation period.

Since that time, it has been responsible for the deaths of some 1,200 security personnel and civilians, including women and children, while more than 4,000 security personnel and over 2,000 civilians have been injured.
