Senior PKK terrorist killed in military operation

One of the four terrorists killed in a counterterrorism operation against the PKK in Tunceli on Monday was determined to be a senior member who was on the "orange list" of the Turkish Interior Ministry's list of wanted persons.

Bilal Serhat Şahin, code-named "Serdem," was responsible for the special forces of the PKK in the Dersim area. He was killed in a joint counterterrorism operation of the National Intelligence Agency (MİT), Gendarmerie Special Operation (JÖH) and Police Special Operation (PÖH) in the rural Pülümür area of Tunceli province.

Elsewhere, Turkish airstrikes destroyed 41 PKK targets in northern Iraq's Asos region, the military said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the airstrikes were carried out with jets and unmanned aerial vehicles, which safely returned to their bases following the completion of the operation.

The targets destroyed include shelters, hideouts and tunnels used by the PKK in northern Iraq.

The Turkish military has been carrying out anti-terrorism operations against PKK positions in northern Iraq since July 2015, with a main focus on the Qandil region, where the terrorist group's main camp is located in.

Founded in 1978, the PKK has waged a bloody, decades-long campaign against the Turkish state.

The group, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU, resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a two-and-a-half-year reconciliation period.

Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of some 1,200 security personnel and civilians, including women and children, and more than 4,000 security personnel and over 2,000 civilians have been injured.
