Israeli soldier jailed for stealing from Turkish aid ship

An Israeli soldier was sentenced on Monday to five months in jail for stealing equipment from the Turkish aid ship Mavi Marmara, aboard which those nine peace activists were killed in the Israeli flotilla attack.

The soldier, who did not take part in the May 31 assault, admitted he stole a laptop and camera lenses from the ship which was aiming to breach Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian aid to the impoverished Palestinian territory. Itai Asael, a prosecutor of the Israel military court, said, "The accused took valuable electronic property from the ship while searching and cleaning up on the Mavi Marmara in June." The soldier -- a squad commander -- was fined 700 shekels ($200) and demoted to the rank of private under a plea-bargain agreement in addition to the jail term. -CIHAN-
