Almost all the stories on Turkish politics penned by Western or West-obsessed Turkish writers start with the same cliche: "Once upon a time, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was a moderate, successful, exemplary Islamist democrat. Oh, we loved him so much. When the Arab Spring spread, many pointed to Erdoğan-led Turkey as a model for guiding the transformation of the Middle East. But those days are over. Suddenly - yes, suddenly - Erdoğan became an autocrat - no wait, he became more evil: a dictator.He became "the dark one" in the Middle East. He somehow ruined the country; now, Turkey is a mess. And it all started with the holy Gezi Park." Their code is simple, actually.If you want to do it yourself, try this:First, you talk about all the good Erdoğan made in 10 years, as you should pretend as if you are objective but don't forget that you must never mention the peace process which Erdoğan initiated last year to end the 30-yearold Kurdish-Turkish conflict right before he went "crazy" (you know what I mean); in other words, the best thing that ever happened to the country if the process succeeds. Nobody needs to know that this is a game changer for the entire Middle East.Second, praise the Gezi Park protests and state one-sided opinions as facts. Just talk to seculars who ruled Turkey for years thanks to bloody coup d'etats. Compare the clashes with Arab streets, not with any protests in Europe or the U.S. And please ignore the police brutality in Europe such as the London Riots in 2011 where British police intervened with excessive use of force and physical violence against protestors.Cameron used the words "sickening scenes of people looting, vandalizing, stealing, robbing," to describe the actions of protestors.For God's sake, how can you write that and then label Erdoğan a dictator and England a democratic country. You can't have both.Finally, quote loyalists of the twisted imam Fethullah Gülen's. Do not talk about his movement's activities or how the whole country was scared of them until a year ago because they were so powerful, held judicial institutions and used the law against their enemies, since this story is about Erdoğan's madness, not what's really going on in Turkey.Not enough? Has Erdoğan still not gone?Then please feel free to whitewash Assad's crimes and lay the blame on Erdoğan.Ah yes, the Arab Spring... It was a lovely wave and went to waste, per se. I assure you, its failure and Erdoğan's being a target is just a coincidence. The West couldn't even call the Egyptian coup a "coup" and John Kerry said the Egyptian army was restoring democracy.And yes, labeling almost half a population terrorists is democracy because they voted for the Muslim Brotherhood. Killing thousands while the whole world watches is democracy. A mass death sentence of 529 people is democracy. You know what they say, "No worries. Sisi will forgive them. They will not actually be executed."As you figured out, it is kindness not injustice.It may seem rotten but this is the democracy the West brings forward for us. Take it or be a terrorist.
