‘He can’t even be a mukhtar’

Outgoing Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has won Turkey's first direct presidential election in the first round after taking more than 50 percent of the votes and has hailed his victory as a new era for the country. In his balcony speech addressing thousands of supporters in front of the Justice and Development Party (Ak Party) HQ in Ankara late on Aug. 10, he said "Today we are closing an era and taking the first step for a new era … Let's start a new social reconciliation period today and let's leave the old discussions in the old Turkey". He stated his victory was for all Turks, not just those who had voted for him. A new era started on Aug. 10, while the old one has closed. A new book has opened for Turkey, while another has been closed.I remember the headlines of the papers about a man banned from office after the post-modern shame of Turkey – the military memorandum which sentenced him to a ten-month prison term for reciting a poem during a public address in Siirt, 1997.Milliyet: "The end of Erdoğan"Cumhuriyet: "Erdoğan's political life is coming to an end"Akşam: "His political life ended"And Turkish media conglomerate Doğan Media Group's flagship paper Hürriyet printed: "He can't even become a mukhtar," which means "he can't even rule a village or a neighborhood."He is now Turkey's first directly elected president. He won a victory in all the 10 elections he entered until now. He won three general elections, four local elections (one with the Welfare Party), two referendums and one presidential election. They even labeled him as a "dictator," the man who breaks through the ballot box with the support of the public as they try to stop him every time. There is no one else who is loved by the public more than he is in Turkey and the entire region as well.Erdoğan's prime ministry was the first season of Turkey's most exciting series. His supporters have seen over the last two years, which is the most nail biting part of the first season, a "war of independence" against local and foreign coup planners. The first season ended on Aug. 10 with the conclusion of the "war of independence" and the victory of people and their leader Erdoğan. The old Turkey has been defeated. The pro-coup mindsets have been defeated. The status quo has been defeated. Turkish nationalism, Kemalism, has been defeated. Turkey has been freed from the vicious cycle of military coups. What will happen now?The answer is obvious. Erdoğan's presidency is a new mission. It's not a goal but an instrument. It's not an end but a means to an end. It sure is not a farewell but a new start. President Erdoğan will carry the mission to make the AK Party's 2023 vision Turkey's reality. The second season's premiere is on Aug. 28 when "the establishment of new Turkey" starts.
