Media figures were not arrested for journalism

The title of this article is not new. Headlines from Gülen Movement-affiliated newspapers were just like this when dozens of outspoken journalists were arrested in 2011. According to their news outlets, those arrested were accused of crimes not directly linked to their journalistic activities. As a matter of fact, Zaman daily editor-in-chief, Ekrem Dumanlı, who made himself a "hero" of journalism this week while he was detained, was defending the arrests in his column on March 7, 2011. Asking: "So the junta doesn't have an arm in the media?" in his piece's title on Today's Zaman, Dumanlı said: "Everybody [not only journalists] should be opposed to individuals being probed over their journalistic activities; however, if acts that cannot be considered as journalism activities are in question, then turning journalism into a shield cannot be allowed. Turkey has for a long time been subject to a psychological operation."If you excuse me, I will give place to his sentences from this piece as an example to the Gulenist media during those days. According to Dumanlı, the evidence that had come out during the trial indicated clearly that a coup plot was never an undertaking hatched by the military alone. He said this was the way it was with all the past coups, and it was unfair to say that the only culprit in past coups were ambitious military officers. He added that there was no doubt that they acquired the most solid support from the media. He was so sure that there was no way that a military intervention could have been staged in this country if there wasn't a media that offered strategic support for a coup. All the coups were made possible in Turkish history thanks to psychological background building conducted by the media. The journalists who were arrested because they tried to look deeper at the Gülen Movement and Fethullah Gülen, according to the majority in Turkey, might be coup plotters, Dumanlı said. According to him, not every journalist is actually a journalist in Turkey. The arguments of those claiming that they were burned because they touched Fethullah Gülen were all propaganda. The books of those journalists, alleging that Gülenists nested in the police department were dictated by shady centers in order to disseminate propaganda against Gülen and to damage his reputation. If that was not propaganda, then nothing was. "If being a partner in this crime is journalism, then woe to such an understanding of journalism." Again, these are not my words, but those from Ekrem Dumanlı.And the defenders of the arrests of the journalists were not limited with the columnists who are directly linked with to the Gülen Movement. Other journalists, especially liberals who criticize President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan every day for his every deed and argue frequently that journalists are under threat in Turkey, were defending the arrests of the journalists back in those days. For example, according to the well-known columnist Cengiz Çandar, the journalists arrested in 2011 were not arrested because of their journalistic activities. You don't believe me? Please check his article published on the Guardian's site in March 2011 with the title, "Who's calling Turkey a police state?"So please, nobody believes the crocodile tears of the ones who chose to side with Fethullah Gülen, the twisted cleric nested in the state with his parallel structure and determined to overthrow an elected government as well as an elected president because the government tried to stop his illegal activities. Everybody remembers that they were defending the trials when there were nearly 100 journalists arrested in Turkey and now they are criticizing Turkey while their dirty deeds are on the table. Turkey was hell for all who objected to bow down in front of Gülen in 2011 and 2012 as the Gülenists were active in the police departments and judiciary on turbo mode. Their media was on duty to whitewash all the operations conducted by them. And now it is time for those who really turned journalism into a shield for their parallel structure and illegal activities.
