The systematic violence unfolding across the occupied West Bank is not a series of random, isolated incidents. Israeli leaders seek to portray it as such — the actions of "extremist fringe elements" beyond government control. But the evidence, documented by U.N. agencies, Palestinian monitors, and even Israeli sources, tells a different story. This is a deeply organized, state-sponsored campaign designed to uproot Palestinians from their land, fragment what remains of their territory, extinguish any viable prospect of a Palestinian state, and eventually Judaize and annex the territory.

A blueprint from the past: Recounting the Galilee’s Judaization

The current strategy against the West Bank follows a well-rehearsed playbook. The "Judaization of Galilee" project, initiated in the 1930s and accelerated after 1948, sought to alter the demographic and geographic reality of historic Palestine's northern region through expulsions, land confiscation, and the strategic placement of Jewish settlements to isolate Arab communities. Plan Dalet, launched in April 1948 by the Zionist Haganah gang, was designed to create geographical continuity between Jewish settlements scattered throughout Galilee, expel its Arab population, and destroy its Arab towns. Despite widespread destruction, nearly 160,000 Palestinian citizens remained in the land on which Israel was established, with the majority living in Galilee. They were subjected to military rule until 1966, and in the early 1950s, plans were put in place to restrict their population, seize their livelihoods, and prevent them from accessing their fields.

Israeli authorities developed "legal" mechanisms that allowed for the seizure of the greater part of Arab property, reducing the area of Arab villages and limiting their natural growth. In the first decade of the state, nearly a million dunams of land were confiscated. Later, the majority of these lands were classified as "state land" before being transformed into Jewish settlements. Settlement was the third pillar of the Judaization project, with Jewish settlement belts established around Arab villages and "settlement cities" built to surround Palestinian communities.

The same blueprint is now being applied to the West Bank: restrict the Palestinian population, seize their land, surround their villages with settlement belts, harass them with attacks and assaults by organized settler gang groups, and create a suffocating reality that leaves them with no choice but to leave. Today, the West Bank is being carved into ever-shrinking enclaves, with settlements and bypass roads – only for settlers’ use – fragmenting Palestinian communities into isolated islands. The goal is to make daily life so miserable and unbearable—through violence, land expropriation, movement restrictions, and the constant threat of settler attacks—that Palestinians are gradually pushed out through a slow, grinding process of attrition. If this is not ethnic cleansing, what else would it be named?

State-sponsored violence: A government directive

The settlers’ violence is not merely tolerated or given a deaf ear; it is directed and sponsored at the highest level of the Israeli government. Settlers are protected and provided with all means to launch attacks on Palestinian communities. The number of serious incidents of "nationalistic crime" committed by extremist Jewish settlers surged by 63% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to Israeli figures. The Israeli Kan public broadcaster reported 660 settler attacks in the first six months of 2026, up from 405 during the same period in 2025.

The Palestinian Authority's Commission against the Wall and Settlements documented 3,488 settler attacks in the West Bank during the first half of 2026, killing 25 Palestinians. Israeli settlers were responsible for 799 of 900 fires set targeting Palestinian homes, property, vehicles, and facilities between the start of 2023 and July 10, 2026. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) documented more than 1,540 settler attacks since the beginning of 2026, with approximately 1,040 Palestinians injured in those attacks.

This is not rogue behavior; it is an official policy. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who oversees settlement activities, has publicly stated that the goal of expanding settlements is to "kill the terrible idea of establishing a terror state in the very heart of the State of Israel." The government recently approved a budget of approximately 1.3 billion shekels ($434 million) to fund the establishment of 34 new settlements. The decision was made by the security cabinet in June but kept under wraps over concerns about the U.S. response. Settlement Minister Orit Strook praised it as "the largest Zionist-settlement move since the establishment of the state." Meanwhile, military orders for land expropriation continue unabated. On Aug. 30, for instance, Israel issued a military order to seize 37.5 dunams of Palestinian land in the central occupied West Bank for the expansion of an existing military site—yet another chapter in the ongoing landgrab (theft) process.

The failure of international community

The international community's response has been paralyzed and ineffective. The UK, France, Germany, and Italy have issued statements condemning Israel's decision to publish construction tenders for the E1 settlement project, warning it would "drive a wedge through the West Bank" and harm the territorial contiguity of Palestinian territories.

Twenty-one countries and the European Commission signed a joint declaration opposing the E1 project and calling on businesses not to bid for construction tenders, warning of legal and reputational consequences.

Yet these condemnations have been consistently ignored or even treated by Israeli leaders as nothing. The E1 settlement project, designed to connect the illegal Ma'ale Adumim settlement with occupied East Jerusalem and include roughly 3,400 settlement units, is advancing despite widespread international opposition. The Palestinian Authority warned companies against participating in the tenders, stating that such involvement would be inconsistent with international legal obligations. But without concrete consequences, Israeli leaders feel no real pressure to change course.

However, this pattern of verbal condemnation has had no tangible effect on Israeli leadership. Not only does Israel consistently ignore these statements, but it has also reached a level of open mockery, treating international outcry as little more than background noise. As long as the international response remains confined to mere words, Israeli leaders will continue to feel no real pressure to change course.

Foreseeable bleak future

The future is foreseeable. Palestinians will continue to lose what remains of their land. The West Bank will become an archipelago of besieged, suffocated Palestinian cantons, surrounded by an ever-expanding network of Israeli settlements and military posts. Not only will the two-state solution be rendered physically impossible, but the very existence of the Palestinians on their lands is threatened by such colonial-settler systematic encroachment.

The Israeli government's brazenness serves as a stark, live example that no U.N. resolution, no Security Council mandate, no international law, and no accountability mechanism is functioning in any meaningful form. The world's failure to act in the face of this organized campaign will not only seal the fate of the Palestinian people; it will embolden an expansionist Israel to encroach further on the lands of its neighbors, and the world is watching, and the world is failing.
