Three TRT coproductions make their way into 2027 Oscar race

From Cannes to the Oscar race, the films carry their festival journeys toward Hollywood’s biggest night



Three films co-produced by Türkiye’s public broadcaster TRT are among the films selected by countries as contenders for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.

According to a statement from TRT, Türkiye’s "Kesilmiş Bir Ağaç Gibi” ("Like a Limbless Tree”), France’s "Minotaur” and Japan’s "All of a Sudden” will compete for the prestigious Academy Award.

Directed by Tunç Davut, the TRT coproduction "Like a Limbless Tree” was selected to represent Türkiye in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled to take place in March 2027. The film won the TRT Co-Production Award at 12 Punto and had its world premiere at the 62nd Antalya Film Festival in October 2025.

The film competed at the 13th Bosphorus Film Festival and the 36th Ankara Film Festival in November 2025, winning the Best Editing award for Naim Kanat at the Bosphorus Film Festival.

"Minotaur,” a TRT coproduction directed by two-time Oscar-nominated Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, was selected as France’s entry for the 99th Academy Awards. A coproduction between France, Germany, Türkiye and Latvia, the film won the TRT International Co-Production Award at 12 Punto 2025.

The film had its world premiere at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in May, where it won the Grand Prix. The film went on to screen at international film festivals, reaching audiences worldwide.

"All of a Sudden,” a TRT coproduction by Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film for "Drive My Car,” was selected as Japan’s entry for the Academy Awards. A coproduction between France, Japan, Türkiye, Germany and Belgium, the film is Hamaguchi’s first feature shot in France.

The film had its world premiere at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, where its leading actresses Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto shared the Best Actress award.

The 15-film shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category will be announced on Dec. 15. Following the announcement of the official Oscar nominees on Jan. 21, 2027, the 99th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 14.
