A cancer research expert has accidentally discovered a way to cure baldness that would remove the need for hair transplants.
Dr. Mirna Perez-Moreno from Spain's National Cancer Research Center was conducting tests of anti-inflammatory drugs on mice, and found that they were growing extra fur.
Moreno discovered that it was a result of macrophages, which are derived from white blood cells produced by the immune system to fight infections and clear dead tissue.
Macrophages activate stem cells responsible for hair growth, and follicles can grow without a hair transplant, according to Moreno.
The related article was published in PLOS Biology magazine, which announced that although the experiment had only been conducted on mice, it will later be tested on humans.
