The United Nation's Human Rights expert Nils Melzer praised Turkish authorities' efforts in combating and preventing torture during a press conference held Friday in Ankara.
Following a week-long visit to Turkey amid claims that prisoners are being subject to maltreatment in the wake of the July 15 failed coup attempt, the U.N.'s Melzer visited prisons throughout Ankara, Istanbul, Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa. The final version of the report compiled by the U.N. torture rapporteur Melzer is to be presented to the Human Rights Committee in March 2018.
The report also included a wide-range of criticisms over the state of emergency measures and Melzer welcomed that the "discipline rooms" had not been used in the prisons of Turkey. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Melzer met with human rights groups, local and international civil society organizations, alleged victims and their families.
