U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has cut his Europe trip short after suffering a broken leg in a bicycle accident in the French Alps on Sunday morning.
Kerry was airlifted by helicopter to a Geneva hospital and is in stable condition, the U.S. State Department Spokesman John Kirby said.
The U.S. state secretary, who was in Switzerland for talks on Iran's nuclear program, is in good spirits after the accident and is expected to make a full recovery, Kirby said.
"Given the injury is near the site of his prior hip surgery, he will return to Boston today to seek treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital with his doctor who did the prior surgery," the spokesman said.
The accident occurred in Scionzier, France near the border with Switzerland.
Kerry will miss his visit to Paris for an anti-ISIS coalition meeting, as well as what would be his first official trip to Spain's capital Madrid.
Kerry was to sign an agreement with his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo. Spain approved an agreement Friday to host a permanent military presence of the U.S.'s Africa Command (AFRICOM) in the southern province of Seville.
