Donald Trump, who was formally nominated as the Republican Party's flagbearer last week, topped Hillary Clinton 48 to 45 percent in a two-way CNN poll out Monday. The figure represents a drastic six-point convention bounce.
In the four-way poll, which included Libertarian Candidate Gary Johnson (9 percent) and Green Party candidate Jill Stein (3 percent), Trump lead Clinton with 44 percent to 39 percent.
The figures showed support for Trump has increased after the Republican National Convention. The CNN reported that the boost for Trump mostly came from independent voters, 46 percent of whom say they now support Trump, while it was only 31 percent before the convention. On the other hand, 34 percent of independent voters said they supported Clinton before the convention, but she suffered a 6 percent loss, with 28 percent supporting her in the CNN poll.
The poll came after a controversy over bias within the party leadership favoring Hillary Clinton on Sunday rocked the Democratic Party on the eve of its national convention in Philadelphia. The head of the party, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, announced her resignation after the publication of emails that indicated party leaders had preferred Clinton over rival Bernie Sanders during the primaries.
Trump sparked a global backlash after he called for a "total and complete shutdown" of all Muslims entering the U.S. He also called for a wall to be built along the southern border to block out Mexicans, whom he called "rapists" while launching his presidency bid at Trump Tower in New York in June 2015. Trump's proposal to ban Muslims has been condemned by Republicans and Democrats alike as un-American and counterproductive, yet his hardline approach on immigration has fueled his popularity among the overwhelmingly white Republican primary electorate.
