An international architecture platform kicked off a competition for architectural projects titled "A House for David Bowie" in order to build an everlasting piece of art to commemorate the late British artist David Bowie who died on Jan. 10 after battling cancer for 18 months. The competition will welcome projects from outstanding architects, and also host an extraordinary project of Turkish architect brothers Sunay and Günay Erdem.
Inspired by Bowie's song "Thru These Architect's Eyes," the project features a house designed as a bird's nest, focusing on Bowie's own criticism of metropolises and huge concrete apartments. Speaking to the press, Sunay Erden said: "The video of the song focuses on the sky, highlighting the longing for an escape to nature. This idea deeply affected us; hence, we thought that if we are going to design a house for Bowie, it should be away from the chaos of the city and should be located somewhere up high. We believe that the best design to emphasize all of these concepts would be a bird's nest."
If the Erdem brothers win the competition, they plan to build the design on the hill of a forest located in the neighborhood in London where Bowie was born. The house design features a staircase made of ropes and resembles of a museum where a library dedicated the life of Bowie stands. Those who want to spend the night at the Bowie-themed house will be accommodated in the house's sole bedroom. The house is planned to cover 7 square meters but will not include a bathroom or a kitchen. Moreover, if the visitors want to have breakfast, they will have to gather fruits and vegetables that they can eat in the surrounding nature.
