Turkish calligraphy, illumination arts discussed in Iran

Professor Uğur Derman, who is known for his research on the art of Turkish calligraphy, and illuminated manuscript master and research professor Fatma Çiçek Derman, will give a conference in Iran.

According to a statement, professor Uğur Derman, who was at Allameh Tabataba'i University yesterday, will explain the condition and progress of calligraphy at Encümen-i Hoşnevisan-ı Shiraz tomorrow as part of the event held by the Yunus Emre Institute (YEE).

Professor Çiçek Derman will also give a conference on illuminated manuscripts today at Ferhengistan-ı Hüner in Tehran and join Professor Uğur Derman in Shiraz tomorrow.

Professor Uğur Derman was born in the Bandırma district in Balıkesir province in 1935. He studied at Haydarpaşa High School and Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Pharmacy School.

He was a student of Necmeddin Okyay in the field of Ottoman book arts and gained ratification in 1960. In 1981, he became the art consultant of the Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA).

Having given lessons at Marmara University Fine Arts Faculty, Institute of Turkic Studies and Mimar Sinan University Fine Arts Faculty, he was accepted by Mimar Sinan University as an academic where he received the title of professor.

He has been sent to Cairo, Jeddah and Chicago by the Ministry of Culture, and also to Bagdad, Kuwait, Islamabad and Tunisia by IRCICA.

Professor Çiçek Derman was born in Ankara in 1945. She graduated from Istanbul University Art History Department and continued to work as an academic at Marmara University Fine Arts Faculty from 1985 to 2012.

The founding president of the Traditional Turkish Arts Department and Illuminated Manuscript-Miniature Department, she wrote the books, "Rikkat Kunt," "Motifs in Turkish Ornamental Arts" with Fatma İnci Ayan Birol and "Ornament of Kadıasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi" with professor Uğur Derman. Professor Çiçek Derman, who learned illuminated manuscript with the master apprentice relationship from Dr. Süheyl Ünver, Muhsin Demironat and Rikkat Kunt, gaining ratification in 1982, was granted the Grand Award of Culture and Art in 2012.
