Two centuries after the birth of the medium, the lens is turning toward Istanbul. Preparing for its landmark ninth edition, 212 Photography Istanbul is set to illuminate the metropolis from Sept. 26 to Oct. 11, 2026. Organized under the umbrella of the Türkiye Cultural Route Festival with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), the 16-day citywide event expands far beyond the conventional gallery layout, fusing contemporary image-making with the historic architecture of the Bosporus.
From iconic Ottoman structures to dynamic cultural hubs, over 25 venues across Istanbul will host a curated tapestry of master retrospectives, group showcases, multidisciplinary panels, film screenings and live performances.
At the core of this year’s programming is a tribute to the pioneers of visual storytelling and contemporary innovators redefining representation, human ecology and form.
At the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Arts Center, world-renowned aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand takes visitors on a journey spanning five decades of work. His panoramic images offer a poetic yet urgent meditation on humanity’s fragile relationship with planet Earth.
The late British documentary photographer Martin Parr is honored with Short & Sweet, a comprehensive retrospective supported by Mavi and presented at the Galata Greek School. Known for his sharp satire, vivid color palette and empathetic eye for everyday rituals, Parr’s work continues to hold a central place in contemporary photography.
Frank Horvat’s Please Don’t Smile, meanwhile, revisits the boundaries of high-fashion photography. Presented at a venue supported by Uludağ, the exhibition explores how Horvat moved away from rigid studio poses and toward the spontaneity of the street, creating a body of work that bridges documentary realism and sartorial art.
Contemporary photographer Jill Greenberg brings a glossy pop aesthetic to the program through her celebrated Monkey Portraits and Art on Cars project, presented in collaboration with main sponsor PEUGEOT. Her work explores themes of emotion, authority and vulnerability while challenging conventional forms of portraiture.
The festival also brings major international exhibitions to Istanbul. Brazilian Modernist Photography, a highlight from the prestigious Les Rencontres d'Arles, will make its Turkish debut at Eski Posta Han, adding an important institutional dimension to this year’s program. Meanwhile, Colors of Scandinavia at 212 Studio brings together 18 Nordic image-makers whose work explores identity, nature and light.
Local visual history will also have a prominent place in the program. The Bülent Eczacıbaşı Foundation Photography Research Center (BEVFAM) will present a dedicated archival exhibition, preserving and reinterpreting Türkiye’s rich photographic heritage for future generations.
What renders 212 Photography Istanbul unique is its insistence on turning urban exploration into an artistic narrative. The 2026 route guides art enthusiasts through some of the city's most architecturally significant sites. Visitors can wander through exhibitions hosted at St. Benoît Church, Taksim Sanat, Yapı Kredi bomontiada, and the Institut français, or engage in architectural walks and discovery routes stretching from Karaköy to the Istanbul Drapery Market (İMÇ).
Parallel exhibitions across prominent galleries – including Anna Laudel, Art ON, Collect Gallery, Evin Sanat, and Ruzy Gallery – further amplify the city’s creative pulse.
Beyond visual arts, the festival bridges sound, motion, and conversation. A slate of panel talks, hands-on workshops, film screenings, and live music performances in collaboration with Sofar Sounds, Zorlu PSM, Babylon, and the Akbank Jazz Festival ensure that photography acts as a springboard for multidisciplinary reflection.
Beyond celebrating established masters, the festival remains deeply committed to nurturing emerging talent. The long-standing Portfolio Reviews offer young and recent graduate photographers rare, direct mentorship sessions with exhibiting international artists and curators.
Concurrently, the International 212 Photography Competition continues its mission of discovering unfiltered talent globally. Free from geographic or thematic constraints, the open-call contest invites amateur and professional lens-based artists to submit their perspectives. Evaluated by a distinguished international jury, the winner will be awarded a 5,000-euro ($5,806.85) prize, with application submissions closing on Sept. 6, 2026.
