Germany-based BMW is preparing to make a facility investment in Sakarya, Turkey. According to daily Milliyet, the German automotive giant will establish a logistics facility as a first step and a manufacturing facility in the upcoming years. According to sources close to the matter, several BMW officials came to Turkey three times, carried out examinations in Sakarya and commissioned a few consulting companies to conduct feasibility studies. It was learned that BMW is conducting serious negotiations to buy 598,000 square meters of land in Sakarya.
Reportedly, investing in Turkey became an issue in meetings held in Germany nearly one month ago under the guidance of the Association of Automotive Parts and Components Manufacturers (TAYSAD). TAYSAD officials said that this matter came to the table in the meeting, but company representatives avoided answering any questions.
In 2011 BMW was going reportedly going to invest in Turkey. CEO Norbert Reithofer said that they are seriously thinking of establishing a manufacturing facility in Russia, India, South Korea or Turkey since these countries have a high potential and the company aims to move forward with its premium class. BMW opened the Kaliningrad facility in the Russian exclave in 2009. One of BMW's biggest recent investments was the facility it announced in Mexico at a cost of $1 billion. In 2007, Canadian Magna said it would establish a facility in Turkey to produce MINI and BMW models.
