Bookworms ready for Bursa book fair

Organized by the TÜYAP Bursa Fair Organization and the Turkish Publishers Association, the 10th annual Bursa Book Fair will host bookworms from March 14 to 22 with a robust program. Many renowned authors, poets, academics and scientists such as İlber Ortaylı, Gülten Dayıoğlu, Can Dündar, Doğan Hızlan, İnci Enginün, Deniz Kavukçuoğlu, Hakan Bıçakçı, Doğu Yücel, Zeynep Oral, Buket Uzuner, Yalvaç Ural, Bengi Semerci, Yekta Kopan, Hakan Akdoğan and Üstün Dökmen will attend the fair and meet their readers. The 10th Bursa Book Fair will feature more than 300 publishing houses and nongovernmental organizations, and will host 80 cultural events including panel sessions, poetry readings and children's events. Moreover, the fair will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli through various events. The 100th birthday of Haldun Taner, a veteran figure of Turkish theater, will also be celebrated with numerous events. On March 14, Taner's short story style will be discussed at a panel session featuring Doğan Hızlan, Yavuz Ekinci and Faruk Duman, and on March 21, Taner's life, works and dramas will be examined thoroughly by Taner's wife, Demet Taner, as well as Zeynep Oral, Ömer Naci Topçu and Kazım Güçlü. Taner's play "Timsah" (Crocodile) will be read by the Nilifer Municipality's City Council Reading Group on March 15.

As part of Taner's commemoration, TÜYAP will also hold an exhibition entitled "Gözlerimi Kaparım Vazifemi Yaparım" (I Close My Eyes and Do My Job). Designed by Sadık Karamustafa, the display will reveal the details of the writer, his photographs, family life, family album and selected works. Turkish diva Müzeyyen Senar, who passed away on Feb. 8, will also be commemorated in a panel session in Bursa, her birthplace. The session will host Radi Dikici, Senar's biographer, and will feature Senar's life and works. Academic and critic Mehmet Kaplan, who made enormous contributions to Turkish literature, will be remembered on his 100th birthday in a panel session on March 14. The session, which will be moderated by Alev Sınar Uğurlu and host İnci Enginün, Zeynep Kerman and Kelime Erdal as speakers, will focus on Kaplan's contributions to literature. Lawyer Hülya Gülbahar and Neşe Hacısalihoğlu, the coordinator of Stop Violence Against Women Campaign, will focus on the issue through both legal and practical lenses. Entry to the book fair is free of charge, and the fair ill be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
