Water retention work will commence at Morgedik Dam in Van, constructed by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, with a ceremony that will take place over the weekend. According to a written announcement from the ministry, the dam has been constructed to meet the irrigation and drinking water requirements of the province of Van. Saying that a 50-year dream has come true in the province, the announcement also noted that the dam was built as a rock-fill dam with a clay core and is 790,000-cubic-meters in width and is 60 meters high.
The announcement said that about 100 million-cubic-meters of water would be stored in the dam and added: "The dam will be the biggest dam in the province used for irrigation and it is also the second highest dam in the region. When the irrigation system of the dam is completed, it will contribute to the agricultural sector in the region. The Morgedik Dam, constructed for TL 79 billion [$35.28 billion], will start retaining water and 46,293 acres of agricultural terrain in the district of Erciş will have access to modern irrigation techniques."
The dam will also contain 18,920,000-cubic-meters of drinking water required for the center of the Erciş district, Çelebibağ and the surrounding areas and the water retention procedure will start with Saturday's ceremony. The dam is scheduled to produce 11 million kilowatt hours of hydroelectric energy and when all units of the dam are completed,it will contribute TL 60 million to the region's economy.
