Five new airports to be built in Anatolia

by Cevdet Özdemir

The general manager of State Airports Authority, Serdar Hüseyin Yıldırım, has said that they plan to build new airports in the provinces of Rize-Artvin, Karaman, Yozgat, Edirne and the west side of Antalya, which will be the third airport in Turkey's tourism center, with the aim of ensuring that there is an "airport present every 100 kilometers."

One of the highest growing sectors in the last 13 years in Turkey is aviation. The policy with the slogan: "Air way will be the way of the public," had especially started to support domestic airline companies that had mostly flown domestic flights since 2003, and now Turkey has become a leader in civil aviation.

While there were only 26 destinations Turkish Airlines flew to from Istanbul and Ankara 13 years ago, now with the opening of the Ordu-Giresun and Hakkari's Selahaddin Eyyubi airports, there are currently 7 airline companies flying to 55 destinations and 208 international flights flying to different locations. Presently there are more than 500 large airplanes and the number of people employed in the field, which was around 65,000 in 2003, has increased to 200,000. The aviation sector's contribution to the economy has risen from $2.2 billion to $27 billion over the last 13 years. The number of passengers has also increased from $34 million in 2003 to $166 million in 2014.
