Turkish cinema honored at 16th International Eskİşehİr Film Festival

The 16th International Eskişehir Film Festival kicked off on Saturday. The festival celebrates the 100th anniversary of Turkish cinema and 600 years of Turkish-Polish relations
Kemal Sunal, one of Turkey's most famous comedians who passed away at an early age, and Perihan Savaş, a leading Turkish actress were presented with the Honorary Award at the 16th International Eskişehir Film Festival, which will run till May 11. The Commitment to Cinema Awards were given to senior photographer Yeşilçam, Güngör Özsoy, and cinema and voice actress Jeyan Mahfi Ayral Tözüm. After accepting her award, Perihan Savaş said, "This is such an honor for me, something I will happily pass down to my kids with pride.
If I am here today it means that I have achieved something." Gül Sunal, Kemal Sunal's wife accepted the award and noted that Eskişehir has an important place in Turkish culture. She also said she was glad that such a festival was being held by a university.
Eskişehir Deputy Governor Ömer Faruk Günay, Deputy Mayor Abdülkadir Adar and Chairman of the Eskişehir Chamber of Commerce Savaş Özaydemir also attended the gala, which commenced with a screening of Steven Knight's film, "Locke."
The festival this year offers a jam packed program including panels, interviews with directors and workshops and master classes for cinema lovers and students. Three documentaries, 51 features and 55 short films will be screened during the festival, which has become an international event drawing audiences from outside Eskşehir. Güngör Özsoy's exhibition titled "50th Years in Yeşilçam," consisting of photographs of important films and actors in Turkish cinema, will also be on
display during the festival.
