EU's support for terror pushes Turkey toward NATO

by Mehmet Barlas

It is high time Turkey and NATO member countries revised relations from a realistic perspective and thoroughly evaluated them. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan duly did this while delivering a speech at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Fall Session in Istanbul on Monday.

As the poet says, "sometimes words will not suffice." However, as Erdoğan spoke, all the words fell into place. There are many benefits to noting some of the highlights of this speech, which articulated the feelings of millions of Turkish people like me:

THE WEAPONS OF FRIENDS

"Now, here I have to explain the truth. The countries in concern should not be offended. The true friend tells the painful truth. Do you know that some of the weapons captured from the groups we declared as terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria are produced by our allies? And we know these weapons well, and we even possess their serial numbers. However, when we inform them [the allies], they do not care."

TERRORIST AGAINST TERRORIST?

"Some say they were provided during previous administrations. Others say we do not consider [the Democratic Union Party/People's Protection Units] PYD/YPG a terror group, [saying that] they fight Daesh. Then, do not accept al-Nusra [as a terror group], either. Al-Nusra also fights Daesh. Can you call a terrorist good simply because they fight against another terrorist? We are seeing this now in Syria and Iraq."

THOSE EMBRACING TERRORISTS

"We want you to prevent the members of terror organizations from moving freely in your country, disseminating propaganda, recruiting militants and exacting tribute through threats. As a terror-stricken country, we cannot digest the PKK, which is designated a terrorist group by the EU, moving very freely in EU member countries and swarming in the corridors of the parliamentary buildings holding the posters of their terror leader."

WHAT IF THE BARRIER IS DESTROYED?

"Turkey is almost like a barrier between the terrorist organizations and the rest of the world and especially Europe. If we fail in this struggle, that is, if this barrier is destroyed, terrorists will set fire to the whole world and shed blood like a flood. We suggest they let us strengthen this barrier, instead of undermining it. Any support given to Turkey in the fight against terrorism will help the country ensure its own future."
