Turkey's foreign ministry on Tuesday expressed concern over recent attacks on Saudi Arabia's missions in Iran.
"As per the the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations [1961], diplomatic and consular mission buildings have total immunity, and countries that accept this convention has the responsibility of providing security of these missions," the foreign ministry said in a statement released on its website.
Accordingly, the attacks on Saudi Arabia's missions in the Iranian cities of Tahran and Mashhad are "unacceptable", the Foreign Ministry said.
The foreign ministry further said that Turkey called for an end to the language of threat and a return to diplomatic language, urging mutual caution.
"Turkey desires that the tension between the two countries does not reflect negatively on the security, stability, and peace of the region," the statement added.
Friction between Shia Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia - fierce regional rivals who support opposing sides in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen - was heightened by the execution of cleric Nimr Baqir al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
Before his arrest in July 2012, al-Nimr led mass protests against the Saudi regime. He was among 47 executed on Saturday over terrorism offenses.
Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran following attacks on its missions in Tehran and Mashhad on Sunday.
Earlier Monday, Bahrain and Sudan followed Riyadh in cutting relations with Iran and expelled Iranian ambassadors in protest at the attacks on Saudi missions. The United Arab Emirates also scaled back its diplomatic representation to Tehran.
On Tuesday, Kuwait recalled its ambassador to Iran, the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) said. The agency quoted an unnamed source who said the recent attacks against Saudi Arabia's embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad are a "flagrant breach of international conventions" and a violation of Iran's commitment to the "security and safety of diplomatic missions on its lands."
Rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran have raised concerns around the globe.
The U.S. on Monday said diplomacy is "essential" between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
"We continue to believe that diplomatic engagement and direct conversations are essential to work through differences," said State Department spokesman John Kirby.
"We reiterate the need for leaders throughout the region to redouble efforts aimed at de-escalating regional tensions."
The U.S. is "concerned" about the recent situation in the region and continues to urge Saudi Arabia to "ensure fair and transparent judicial proceedings in all cases," according to Kirby.
