The Turkish Employment Agency (İŞKUR) announced that it was unable to fill 100,000 vacant positions in April because of a labor shortage in some areas in Turkey. İŞKUR General Manager Nusret Yazıcı said that they welcome people who are looking for a job or do not like their current jobs. He said that there are many offers for the unemployed who send applications. Emphasizing that İŞKUR looked for 176,000 employees in April alone, Yazıcı said that "even though we found 70,000 employees, more than 100,000 employees are needed for vacant positions. In other words, there are many available jobs. We are waiting for those who want to work." Saying that they asked employers the reason why there is a labor shortage, Yazıcı said that "more than half of the problems stem from people who are not competent at a profession. Twenty-five percent of the problem is about wages while 20 percent is related to working conditions. The interesting part is that manual workers are also among the working groups that cannot be covered. The vacant positions are mostly seen in the field of security guards, sales assistants and office clerks. In April, the highest labor shortage was seen in sales assistants, security guards and waiters." Saying that İŞKUR was chosen for the presidency of the World Association of Public Employment Services (WAPES), Yazıcı said: "The WAPES is an association that has 94 member countries. We won the elections by receiving votes from 41 countries. The fact that we took up the presidency indicates that the policies we are performing are gaining acceptance all around the world." According to the labor force statistics for February that the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) released two weeks ago, the unemployment rate was 11.2 percent, indicating a 0.1 percent decrease in February compared to the previous month.
