Turkey Scholarships see record number of applicants

The interest in the Turkey Scholarships program that enables international students to study in Turkey has continued to increase as it recently saw a record number of applicants.

Run by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), the scholarships program has made Turkey one of the top destinations for international students. When the program first started in 2012, it received 42,000 applications. As of this year, 145,700 students from 167 countries preferred Turkey. Following their education in Turkey, the students return home, taking up significant positions and playing important roles in building a friendship with Turkey.

Commenting on the increasing interest in the program, YTB President Abdullah Eren said, "The interest in Turkey Scholarships is making us happy. We are trying to increase and develop scholarship opportunities in the face of increasing interest and demand. This year we have extended the deadline for the application process because of the interest [shown]."

He added that they aim to increase the number of scholarship holders, currently at 17,000, to 25,000 by 2023.

Within the scope of the program, 5,000 students receive scholarships every year after interviews are conducted in 100 regions around the world. Accordingly, successful candidates come to Turkey and receive language education for a year. After that, the students are placed at universities of their preferences. The program covers the living costs of the students and monthly pocket money. The YTB also provides the flight tickets to the students when they first arrive in Turkey and also when they leave Turkey.

The Turkey Scholarships official website stressed that the program not only provides financial support but also ensures university placement for students in their intended programs. With this feature, it differs from other scholarship programs in the world.

Established in 2010, the YTB coordinates the activities of Turks living abroad and related communities. It also develops ties through economic, social and cultural activities.
