U.S.-based artist Nika Roza Danilova's pop-art project titled "Zola Jesus" will appear at the Istanbul Foundation for Arts and Culture tonight. Danilova, who began performing in operas at the age of 10, felt close to the sound of rock as she reached her 20s. When she decided to perform on stage, she invented her stage name by mixing the names of Jesus Christ and Emile Zola. Zola Jesus, who released five LP's and three EP's, performed and toured the world as the opening act of Fever Ray and The XX. Her Schopenhauer and Nietzsche readings underlie her lyrics, while Ian Curtis and Lydia Lunch underlie her music. Danilova has been named as the heir to Kate Bush, Lisa Gerrard and Elizabeth Fraser.
