Temel Erbakan İskenderoğlu, who serves as an imam in the Black Sea town of Maçka in Trabzon province, has chaired Galyanspor, an amateur club for the past two years. As Turkey's first imam to serve as club president, İskenderoğlu's first aim was to save the youth from bad habits and encourage them to do sports. He said, "I have been doing this job because I want to protect our youth from alcohol consumption, gambling and the other harmful addictions. Everyone can play in Galyanspor. We urgently need a pitch. We want the town people to watch our training. We want them to experience the excitement. We will work on this with the administration."
"I work with the team in my free times. My real profession is being an imam. I played football as a goalkeeper for 16 years. A lot of people emigrate from our town, and the townspeople want the youth to spend their times in a useful way. So we founded the club for the youth in 2010. Because we don't have a field, we have to go to Trabzon to train."
"Some friends of mine asked me how an imam becomes a club president. But I believe an imam's job is not only to lead people in prayer. We are working on all the problems of our community. Our motto is 'Sports is not a competition, peace and brotherhood.' "
