The Turkish and Russian national teams will play a friendly match in Antalya at the end of August, according to a statement released by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).
The game will take place on Aug. 31. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was expected to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the game during their meeting in St. Petersburg yesterday. Turkey, who will host the Russian national team for the first time in 22 years, have played against their rivals 17 times.
Turkey have enjoyed little success, losing 14 matches and drawing three. The last match between Turkey and Russia was played in April 22, 1988 in Moscow with the hosts winning 1-0. The Turkish national team will also be hosted by Croatia on Sept. 5 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group I qualifications.
