Tensions high after Lice demonstrations in Istanbul

Demonstrations took place on Sunday in Bağcılar, Istanbul after two people died in Lice, a district of the southeastern province Diyarbakır.

Protestors started throwing rocks and glass bottles during a march in the Bağcılar district of Istanbul, leaving the police with no choice but to take action.

Demonstrators had a sit-in on the street but after rioters started throwing rocks and bottles riot police were forced to use pressurized water and gas to disperse the group. Demonstrators scattered into side streets causing a game of cat and mouse between the police and the group.

A policed helicopter was deployed while police on the ground closed off some roads to control the demonstrations. The tramway was also closed in the Bağcılar area due to dangerous conditions.

In front of the BDP district building, protestors which included woman and children gathered, and started a march toward Bağcılar Square while chanting a variety of slogans.

A while later another group gathered in front of the BDP district building. The police told the crowd to exit the building's premises.

A man threatened militants with a utility knife (on left hand) as Turkish policemen grabbed him during a clash in the Bagcilar district of Istanbul.

Many automobiles were damaged during the demonstrations. Dumpsters were also knocked over and damaged. People were left hiding behind police to stay away from danger.

Riot police cut off the path of the protestors as they were getting closer to the district police department. While the police and the group were exchanging dialogue, a person threw a glass bottle form the tenth floor of an apartment building injuring a 10 year old boy. Drawing strong reactions from the crowd and on-lookers the young boy was quickly escorted away from the scene.

During the clash a police officer was wounded on the face and another was wounded on his arm. Also a woman became ill due to the tear gas.
