Turkey to be an example in the fight against drugs

by Anadolu Agency

The World Health Organization's (WHO) office in Turkey translated "Turkey's Urgent Action Plan to Fight against Drugs" into English to set an example for other countries. Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), the former president of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey's Commission on Health, Family, Work and Social Administration, Necdet Ünüvar, said Turkey's fight against drugs continues without slowing down. He said the "Technical Board for the Fight against Drugs" convenes regularly under the leadership of the Health Ministry deputy minister Hüseyin Çelik, and offered insight about the board's latest meeting as well as the government's Urgent Action Plan to Fight against Drugs.

The board consists of 40 officials from the Justice Ministry, Family and Social Affairs Ministry, Labor and Social Security Ministry, Youth and Sports Ministry, Customs and Trade Ministry, Interior Ministry, National Education Ministry and Culture and Tourism Ministry as well as the Directorate of Religious Affairs, General Commandership of the Gendarmerie, Turkish Green Crescent Society and Directorate General of Press and Information.

Highlighting that the fight against drugs needs to be incorporated into long-term planning in order to become successful, Ünüvar said: "It should be such an intense fight that it should keep going even if those who are involved in this process leave their positions to others. The fight against drugs should be a state policy." He said Turkey is in a great position regarding the fight against drugs, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu's determination on the subject play a great role in the plan.
