"Emerging Infectious Diseases Clinical Case Studies", written and edited by Turkish professors, was awarded the title of 'Book of the Year' in the category of public health by the British Medicine Association in this year's Medical Book Awards held on September 3, in London's Russel Square.
Edited by Koç University's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious diseases and Clinical Microbiology Professor Doctor Önder Ergönül, Füsun Can, Murat Akova and Harvard University's Lawrence Madoff, the book was given first prize among 630 competing books.
Handed the award by Professor Sir Al Aynsley-Green Kt, BMA President and also guest of honor; Turkish Prof. Dr. Ergönül said that it was an honor to receive such a prestigious award from the world's oldest medical association and added that their book was set to be a 'pioneer' in its field.
"Competing and winning against reputable universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, in addition to British and American academics renowned in medicine, is a great achievement for Turkey and Turkish medicine" said Ergönül.
Remarking that the preparation work for the book began in 2012 with challenging questions from students, Ergönül stated that the team of professors attributed the book to medicine students.
"We brought people working various fields; basic medicine, clinical medicine and epidemics. We summarized new infections, 28 in total.
Starting out from clinical case studies, we researched and composed everything on vaccination, treatments, innovations and many others…Some of our colleagues might not have even heard the names of some of these infections, but our book has put all these details in one place," Ergönül further added.
The BMA Medical Book Awards takes place annually to recognize
outstanding contributions to the medical literature.
Prizes are awarded in 21 categories along with special prizes for the BMA Illustrated Book Award, the BMA Student Textbook Award, the BMA Young Authors Award, the BMA Council Chair's Choice and a BMA President's Choice award.
Entries for the 2016 Awards will open in mid-December.
