A local company in central Konya province has come up with a new product that will help patients with obesity, heart disease or diabetes to safely consume food harmful for their health.
In partnership with TÜBİTAK, the special flour will hit the shelves next year and will initially be available at pharmacies and then supermarkets.
The contents of the special white flour will be prepared to minimize the factors that trigger heart disease, obesity or diabetes. The project started three-and-a-half years ago to introduce a novel idea to ease the strict diets of patients with obesity or diabetes.
Nurettin Demirpolat, the company's chairman, said the product is an entirely domestic and safe one that can be consumed by patients with certain chronic diseases.
Refined starches in white bread as well as in rice and pasta affect glucose control and are not generally recommended to patients with diabetes. Instead whole grains are a better choice because they are richer in fiber and generally cause a slower, steadier rise in blood sugar.
According to a study carried out in the U.S., people eat enough extra calories, mostly through refined carbs, to add three pounds of body fat per month to their weight. Eating a diet that includes a lot of high glycemic index foods is associated with obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even cancer.
The special flour will lower the glycemic index and will be better digested with its fiber content. It will also have probiotic character that will increase energy consumption, helping to lose weight and will better protect intestinal flora. After its release, diabetes patients or obese people can consume white bread made of this special flour.
