A criminal who was using his dead brother's ID for years to hide from authorities was caught after his mother unintentionally addressed him by his real name.

During a routine check on a fugitive in the northwestern province of Düzce, police officers visited the home of Murat Açil, who was wanted for two separate crimes.

When police asked for Murat, his mother accidentally called for him using his name. However, Murat had an ID card with his photo but the name of his brother Mehmet, who died in 1975. It appeared he had been using the ID since 2009, when he deceived the local population registry to issue a real ID in his dead brother's name.

When the police saw that the name on the ID and what the mother said didn't match, they took him into custody. Murat Açil was later arraigned by a court in Düzce and sent to prison.
