Çengelköy, a quiet neighborhood on the Asian coast of the Bosporus, found itself at the center of a bloody coup attempt on July 15 as the host of the oldest military high school in Turkey where pro-coup officers emerged from to take over the city. Seventeen residents were killed and dozens more were injured when they stood against the pro-coup officers loyal to a junta linked to the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ).
A therapy center recently established in the neighborhood offers psychiatric counsel both to families of victims and people injured in the coup attempt. The three-floor building run by Üsküdar Municipality where Çengelköy is located was introduced to media outlets earlier this week. Özlem Bağlar, who works as a therapist at the center, said apart from offering psychiatric care and counsel at the center, they regularly visit the victims and relatives of victims at their homes for free therapy.
More than 240 people were killed when the public resisted pro-coup troops in an unprecedented move. Victims were declared "martyrs" by the country, designating July 15 as "Democracy and Freedoms Day."
