Your child's education is amongst the most important things you can give them to prepare them for a successful future. Apart from the crucial decision of which school to send them to, deciding if main stream school is the most effective for their development is another question parents are now considering
The newschool year has started. As parents, you have a million worries and questions in your mind about your child's school, teachers and classmates. Therefore, some parents are interested in educating their children at home. Is it possible to educate your child at home without formal education? If yes, how is that possible? Is the traditional school system not enough in today's world? But the main question is that "Is home schooling the right choice for my child?" You may not be sure that it is for you and may not know where to start. That is totally normal and you are in the right place.
Making the decision to take control of your child's education can seem overwhelming and daunting. More and more families are making the decision to homeschool their children, part-time or fulltime, in America. As a result, today more than 3 million children are being taught at home by parents just like you. Nevertheless, home schooling is the right choice as long as you are a committed and involved parent with no history of mental illness and violence, and of course with at least normal intelligence.
Home-school students may have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities in public schools, such as after-school programs, which are student activity programs that are run by a school and are not included in a graded course of study.
Benefits of Home Schooling
Home-schooling provides positive academic, social, emotional and spiritual benefits for any family that gives it an honest chance. Research has shown that home-schooled children exceed both their public and private school peers in every academic area.
Safety: Schools have become dangerous. As parents, you do not have to worry about who is taking guns or knives to school. Also, your children will not have to fear bullies at school, a specter that frightens children and negatively affects their academic success.
Less Exposure to Alcohol and Drugs: The vast majority of children do not get drugs at home. Substances are introduced to them at school or near school. According to Green Crescent, children start drinking at the age of 12-13. These children are four times more likely to become alcohol dependent than those who wait until 18, the legal drinking age.
ADHD-Free Children: Sitting in a hard chair for long periods is not comfortable. They are children and due to their normal behavior, such as sitting on the floor, standing up when they are uncomfortable, and running around when they need to burn off energy, nowadays, children are getting labeled more and more with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). That leads to pressure on parents to medicate their perfectly normal children with psychoactive drugs. However, homeschoolers are free to act normally and are able to learn what misbehavior is without being labeled. If your child is misbehaving, ask a parent with a big family. He or she will tell you what will work. If you are undecided between traditional school and homeschool, you should consider alternative home schooling or after-school programs with extracurricular activities. Take the time to do the research and weigh the pros and cons. The sky is the limit as long as you are dedicated to your child's education and flexible. So, where do you start? You need to relax first because there are many people who think exactly like you. Find a local group of people with whom you can start brainstorming alternative education opportunities.
Home schooling can be fun and successful with your network. Identify your children's needs. You do not want to bore your children with teaching them the same stuff they already learned at school. Be patient. You might be multitasking, but your children are still learning. Hence, develop a schedule that will allow your children to concentrate on one subject at a time. Read "how to" books about home schooling and alternative education.
They read at school, but they need to explore.
Now you have an opportunity to organize an educational field trip with your local home-school group. Take your children out, visit historic sites, science and art museums, monuments and more. Always consult with an expert because anyone can home-school a child for a few months, but that does not make them a home-school expert. Most importantly, check in with your children's teachers each week to make sure that they are not missing out anything.
What about Turkey? How can we homeschool our children? Unfortunately, home schooling is illegal in Turkey. Public education is mandatory without exception. All children are required to be registered in public or private schools to comply with the National Education Basic Law. Parents who fail to send their children to school are charged as criminals, which at times may result in their imprisonment. Due to the legal constraints, Turkish parents face a great deal of difficulty in pursuing home schooling for their children because of their limited rights to participate in decisions that affect their children's education. As the education law explicitly refers to Turkish children, foreigners have an easier time home-schooling their children.
Let's hope that modern Turkey will consider individual freedom, the fundamental human right to receive alternative education, and provide equal access to a quality education adapted to meet individual's needs.
