Wool carpets regain their worth

For a long time, wool carpets appeared only in homes with classic interior designs, but they are now taking center stage. Keeping a wool carpet at home is part of Turkish culture and is a symbol of cultural roots

I came across an article about woolen carpets in an English home-decorating magazine. The magazine was backing the "Campaign for Wool," which was supported by various governmental institutions, important carpet producers and suppliers, the purpose of which was to demonstrate the importance of woolen carpets. In other words, these groups have begun to realize and to promote the value of woolen carpets which we have replaced by synthetic and synthetic-mixed products. The fact that the campaign is supported by a reputable decorating magazine is great. What upsets me is that we cannot make our presence felt in the carpet production business when, only a short time ago, we used to be one of the first countries to spring to mind when it came to carpet production. Although the traditional Turkish carpet had an important place in every home in days gone by, we were not able to adapt it to modern tastes in decoration, and so it was replaced by machine-made carpets. We developed a preference for synthetic, washable materials since they were easy to use. In the same way that we could not protect our woolen beds and quilts, we could not protect our carpets either. It is still possible to see woolen carpets in classic interior designs; however, this happens so rarely in modern homes, that I find it quite appalling. When I look at the decorating magazines published in various places around the world, I often see pictures of traditional carpets in very modern homes, especially in European magazines. The precious, hand-made carpet takes pride of place at home and celebrates its unique contribution to the decor!

THE ADVANTAGES OF WOOLEN CARPETS

A carpet is one of the most important elements of interior design. Even though its absence is not always felt, its appearance makes a difference to the decoration. Yet, to have a woolen carpet at home is seen more as a cultural symbol and a sign of displaying cultural roots. Everybody knows about the lack of sound-proofing in apartment blocks. If there is no carpet, then the conversations upstairs can be easily heard; however, a good woolen carpet can provide sound insulation. The carpet also avoids the sound echoed in the empty area of the room. Being much more durable in comparison to other materials, a woolen carpet also acts as a layer of protection against fire. Unlike synthetic fibers which burn quickly, wool burns slowly, and in this way may act to minimize the fire. Similarly, thanks to its moisture-repelling features, it does not immediately absorb liquids poured on the carpet, so if you deal with the spill swiftly, it does not stain easily. Besides, woolen carpets of high quality tend to become more beautiful with age, like wine. As we use and walk on it, so it flourishes.

INNOVATION

Fold and put aside: Do not worry about inadequate seats when you throw a party at home. You can host as many guests as you wish with cardboard stools that can be installed easily and turned into a paper-thin plate. www.bongavon.com

TREND

Neon red: Neon colors have been in fashion since last summer. There is a color which became prominent with pastel tones such as pink, yellow and green. Neon red has recently become a favorite and preferred color.

CHOICE OF PATTERNS

Aged carpets, gaining in popularity in recent years, harmonize with almost any decoration style or color due to the fact that their patterns have almost faded. This fact must be the reason for their popularity because according to modern decorating styles, it is difficult to harmonize patterns on carpets with the rest of the decor. This could also explain why carpets with geometric patterns are preferred over those with traditional designs. Geometric patterns usually create illusions that add an extra dimension to decoration. For instance, a cross-striped carpet might make a narrow room look broader, while a darkly-colored, small carpet might create the same effect. The carpets with patterns in the middle should be used in rooms which have a large and comfortable seating arrangement, so that the pattern can be seen clearly. Such carpets can be incorporated into the room's decorative design by solutions such as putting a transparent glass table on it to make the pattern more visible.
