Introduced by the Foreign Ministry in 2013, over 6 million people applied through the e-Visa system last year. Eighty-eight percent of those applications were approved leading to 5.5 million people obtaining a visa online.
According to the Foreign Ministry's data, approximately 10,000 visa applications are made daily on the e-Visa system. However, the number of applications differed greatly between seasons. They were at their highest rate on Aug. 7, 2014 when 44,000 people applied for an e-Visa.
Britons were the most frequent users of the e-Visa system with 1.6 million applications while the Dutch came second with over 600,000 applications. The other countries that topped the list, ranked third through 10th, were Iraq, Belgium, Poland, the U.S., Norway, Austria, Saudi Arabia and Spain.
Launched in April 2013 in order to prevent long lines at border gates and airports, the e-Visa system provides great convenience to visitors. The Turkish visa application takes three minutes through the Electronic Visa Application System at www.evisa.gov.tr.
