A group of university students in İzmir developed a mobile app that enables pet owners to take care of their beloved animals from a distance. The "Smart Pet Assistant Project" was developed by Gürkan Akpınar, Cemre Mat and Sait Fatih Karakaya from İzmir University of Economics' (İEU) Department of Computer Engineering under the supervision of Vice Chancellor Murat Aşkar. The care unit, which was also developed in parallel with the mobile app, allows people to meet the needs and demands of their pets via their cellphones or tablet computers. The users are also able to check the amount of water and food in the pet care unit when they are away from home.
The system, which warns the users when the food or the water in the care unit runs out, also enables the user to change the amount of food and the frequency of feeding. In addition to executing the instant commands of the users, the system can also automatically give food and water to pets by using the stored information and settings in its database. Moreover, the system warms the pet's pillow when the room temperature drops below a critical level. The app has an emergency button to connect to a veterinarian and it also reminds pet owners about medicine timings and keeps a record of the animal's vaccination dates.
Akpınar said the system is mainly for cats and dogs right now, and stressed: "Our primary aim is to prevent certain problems that pet owners face. We [want to] reduce their workload and help them to take care of their animals in a particular way."
