Would you like to run a farm and harvest organic produce while sitting on a computer? Komşuköy is the meeting point for urban farmers in Istanbul's Beykoz district, allowing them to grow their own natural products through an online platform that delivers organic products right to your door
City life can be chaotic. If you live in a big metropolis like Istanbul, the natural life can seem like a far-off dream. Unfortunately, there is little-to-no space in the city where you can experience a day in nature with all its pleasure and serenity. The need for personal interaction has led many people to seek a place free of environmental and food pollution. Komşuköy, an interactive online platform, allows people in Istanbul to grow their own natural products using an online platform that delivers organic products right to your door. In addition to allowing an escape from the pollution of the city, Komşuköy makes your dreams of owning a farm come true. The platform allows you to purchase a section of a plantation field where you can grow all natural products with no hormones or GMOs. You can take care of your crops and plants online through the platform which gives you a 24-hour live stream of your plantation where you can monitor your crops every day until they are ready to be harvested and delivered to your table. Here is a closer look into how the system works.
What is Komşuköy?
Komşuköy is more than just an online platform. The concept behind the system is aimed to promote natural living in a big city where it might seem impossible. The Komşuköy team who works in the plantations is responsible for the maintenance of your crops in every stage, including planting, growing, harvesting, packaging and delivering. The team uses special care to pick 100 percent natural domestic seeds for your plants and doesn't use any chemicals in the growing of the products. By refraining from the use of GMOs and hormones, the Komşuköy team is able to ensure the quality of your natural harvests. Aside from these precautions, the team also takes great effort in being mindful of the natural cycles of plants. By growing crops according to peak seasons and natural weather conditions, the team ensures fruits and vegetables with high nutritional content. Because so much care is given to the assurance of 100 percent naturally grown products, Komşuköy does not allow you to plant your own seeds. But, have no fear. With a wide range of seeds and saplings to choose from, you can find most fruits and vegetables on the list.
Where is it?
The plantations for Komşuköy are located in Istanbul's Beykoz, Cumhuriyet village, in a big field with sectioned off areas for each customer's crops.
How does it work?
The process of owning a plantation on the Komşuköy farm is only possible by booking an appointment. You can make an appointment through email@example.com but the meeting for the appointments must be made face-to-face. After purchasing your field, the online app and monitoring system becomes active right away. The game screen allows a fun and exciting way to manage your crops and keep track of their growth directly from your phone. Komşuköy allows you to visit your plantation in person as well. Though the team takes care of everything for you, you can go down to water and take care of your fruits and vegetables yourself, as a hobby. Your plantation belongs to you, meaning that you can have access to it whenever you please. Turning the visit into a fun activity in a natural environment by bringing down friends and family is also encouraged by the team.
How much is it?
The price for purchasing a field is TL 362 (roughly $120), which you can pay in nine installment payments. The yearly cost amounts to TL 3,250 (roughly $1,086). The price includes the field area, seeds, saplings, all maintenance fees, harvesting fees and delivery to all parts of Istanbul.
The sectioning for the fields is done according to the type of productions. Each field is made up of seven rows. This means that you can grow seven kinds of plants in your field. Komşuköy allows a free trading option, which allows you to exchange your crops with other plantation owners to multiply your verity. In an interview for Yeşilist, one of the founders of Komşuköy, Özden Akyıldız spoke about how the idea for Komşuköy came into realization, saying that "Actually, the idea was the result of analyzing general necessities. We are all people who live in big cities while trying to pay attention to our health and raise our standards of living. The project started out by simply planting a few things, but now we want to create a farm life in its entirety. We are an expanding organic structure. [...] and we'll have harvest festivals."
