To mark International Women's Day, the profiles of successful female Turkish professionals were added to Vikipedi, the Turkish version of Wikipedia during an event titled "Vikipedi'ye Kadınları Yazıyoruz" (We are Adding Women to Vikipedia) in Ankara on Monday.
Held at CerModern under the sponsorship of the Embassy of Finland and the Flying Broom, a women's organization, the event was overseen by Nina Vaskunlahti, the Finnish Ambassador to Turkey and members of Flying Broom. "It is true to say that gender bias also exists on Wikipedia," Vaskunlahti said, adding only 19 percent of Wikipedia content in Finnish covers profiles of women, and the situation is the same for Turkey. Vaskunlahti said she has met women actively working for women's rights.
"The whole society should work for and contribute to women's development," she added. She also stressed that women compose around 48 percent of the labor force in Finland. Among the profiles added to Vikipedi are former basketball player Gülseren Gönül, director Belmin Söylemez and artist Füsun Onur.
