Having served as the Ottoman Empire's capital for a century and containing several historical sites, Edirne will introduce multilingual commentary in six different languages on two-story open-topped tour buses. Edirne Mayor Gürkan said: "This implementation has many examples in cites with the same historical texture and cultural identity as Edirne, such as Athens, Malta, Barcelona, Paris and London."
Taking the bus's wheel, Gürkan held an introductory tour around the key sights and top attractions in Edirne including Mimar Sinan's masterpiece Selimiye Mosque, Edirne Palace, Ermeydanı in Sarayiçi where Historical Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festivals are held, Meriç and Tunca Bridges and the Karaağaç district.
Speaking to reporters, Gürkan said that the border city of Edirne leads the way in Turkey in terms of historical sites and ranked second in the world after Florence regarding the number of historical monuments per square meter.
Citing that these buses and promotions had similar examples around the world, Gürkan said: "This implementation has many examples in cites with the same historical texture and cultural identity as Edirne, such as Athens, Malta, Barcelona, Paris and London. A bus with these features has only been used in Istanbul. Our bus will begin serving in Edirne as the second city following Istanbul. The operation of these buses historically introducing the Ottoman Empire's two capitals, Istanbul and Edirne, is a really pleasant situation." Pointing out that the border city Edirne hosts 3 million tourists annually and is increasing its capacity day by day, Gürkan said that local and foreign tourists visiting Edirne can listen a multilingual commentary on the city in six different languages on the sightseeing route. He also added that this bus would contribute to tourism in the city.
Indicating that the test drive was successful, Gürkan said: "All of our citizens will be able to take the tour during the 655th Historical Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival, which will be held between June 18 and June 24. We will later organize these tours within the city tour concept after determining a price by looking into its examples around the world but also considering the conditions in Turkey."
