Konya, which was previously chosen as the Islamic Capital of Tourism for 2016 by the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), has now been chosen as "World Pilot City for Culture" by the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

UCLG Co-Chair and Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tahir Akyürek said Konya continues to represent Turkey and play an important role in the managing bodies of 18 different international organizations such as the UCLG, OIC, EUROCITIES, Union of Historic Cities, Union of Life-Long Learning Cities and World Water Council. Akyürek also said that Konya is a sister city to 49 different cities around the world and keeps close relationships with all of them. Stressing the fact that Konya contributes to international organizations with its historic mission and cultural richness, Akyürek said Konya was chosen as the "World Pilot City for Culture" in order to lead and initiate cultural projects within the UCLG.

Akyürek claimed that being selected as World Pilot City for Culture will contribute to Konya's recognition on the international platform and continued: "Konya, which has caught the eye of the world with its cultural gems, now has a chance to host international seminars, workshops, cultural events and summits. Through these organizations, Konya will also support, encourage and contribute to cultural productions and services."

The central Anatolian city of Konya welcomes nearly 2 million tourists every year. The city is considered the birthplace of Sufism and is identified with the famous Persian poet Mevlana as he established the Mawlavi Sufi order in Konya, where he settled with his family after fleeing the Mongol invasion of Central Asia in the 1220s. The city also stands out for its Seljuk architecture since the city played an important role in Seljuk history as the capital city of the empire. Apart from its historical roots, Konya is also famous for its delicious cuisine and mouth-watering dishes that attract thousands of people to the city every year.
