Saudi Arabia intensified its airstrikes against the main Shiite rebel stronghold in Yemen, with warplanes launching more than 50 strikes overnight and early on Friday, Saudi and Yemeni officials said.
In a more aggressive move, a Saudi Ministry of Defense spokesman said "The security of Saudi Arabia is a red line that has been crossed and the Houthis will pay the price."
The intensified airstrikes cast a shadow over a cease-fire announced in Riyadh by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and the Saudi foreign minister. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch (HRW) condemned attacks of pro-Houthis forces targeting civilians.
"Aden's civilians are already in dire straits, without being attacked, detained, and held hostage," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East and North Africa director.
