The Republican People's Party (CHP) pressed charges on Monday against public prosecutors for the investigation of corruption allegations on its Istanbul deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi and Istanbul's Ataşehir district mayor Battal İlgezdi.
CHP's Istanbul Provincial Chairman Murat Karayalçın applied to the public prosecutor's office in Istanbul's Asian side for a detailed investigation recently covered by the press. Karayalçın arrived at the scene with İlgezdi couple.
In the petition given to the prosecutor's office, the couple asked for a detailed investigation regarding the allegations and asked for a public lawsuit to be launched if the allegations are proved to be false.
Battal İlgezdi stated that he bought the land in which the bulding is erected five years early before he was elected the mayor of Ataşehir district, and he received 17 apartments in exchange of letting a construction company to build a residence. Mayor İlgezdi also stated that Zeynep Kılıçdaroğlu bought her apartment from the construction firm.
Deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi also dismissed the allegations and stated that she declared her wealth in her 21 years of public service.
The İlgezdi couple is being accused of purchasing 15 highly expensive flats in two Istanbul residences not affordable by their financial means. The incident is also covered in the press as 'BuzGate' referring to the name of one of the projects.
Zeynep Kılıçdaroğlu, daughter of party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has also bought a flat in the said skyscraper. CHP sources also stated that chairman Kılıçdaroğlu is expected to make a similar move for the investigation of the purchase.
