The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is getting ready to offer an amendment to parliamentary internal regulations after Ramazan Bayramı, also known as Eid al-Fitr, the holiday making the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. AK Party Group Deputy Chairman Mustafa Elitaş explained the need for an amendment on Sunday, saying, "The urgent regulations the country needs are literally held on to due to the arbitrariness of the opposition. An amendment is inevitable for an effectively working Parliament."
Blaming the opposition and parliamentary deputy speakers, Elitaş said that "Both the malfeasance of the opposition and the different implementation of the parliamentary internal regulations by the four different parliamentary deputy speakers have caused a total state of by-lawlessness," claiming that Parliament loses four-to-five hours every day before passing on to the parliamentary agenda because of the opposition's suggestions concerning the agenda. It was also revealed that upon hearing of the AK Party's intent to take action for
an amendment, the Republican People's Party (CHP) contacted the group deputy chairmen of the AK Party to propose a negotiated offer for the amendment. Republican People's Party (CHP) Group Deputy Chairman Özgür Özel is claimed to have said, "Let's come to an agreement on the offer. Otherwise we will block the process in every way possible." Elitaş dared the CHP to stick to the statement. The CHP insisted on broadcasting parliamentary meetings live, and the AK Party staff said that the broadcast of discussions is not a red line for the party, stating that the issue will be conveyed to Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım.In previous weeks, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also underlined that an amendment to parliamentary internal regulations is necessary to accelerate the country's development, saying, "For me, changing the parliamentary internal regulations swiftly is the priority because the current rules of procedure virtually ensure primitive action in Parliament's present work. We need to get rid of this primitive practice. Deputies in top positions do not benefit the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish people."
