Parliament's committee for July 15 coup investigation holds first meeting, elects president

The Parliamentary Investigation Committee established following the failed July 15 coup convened for the first time on Tuesday, during which time the committee members elected a chairperson and determined its roadmap for the process.
Ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Burdur deputy Reşat Petek was elected as the president of the committee, which is to comprehensively assess the coup attempt in the name of Parliament, the public, and the Republic of Turkey. The deputy president of the committee elected was the AK Party's Manisa deputy Selçuk Özdağ, and the speaker of the committee is AK Party Istanbul deputy Mihrimah Belma Satır. AK Party Erzincan deputy Serkan Bayram has also been elected as the secretary to the parliamentary committee.
Speaking at the meeting, committee head Petek said all committee members' opinions, suggestions and proposals will be addressed and thoroughly assessed in the course of the investigation into the coup attempt. Petek further underlined that the committee has a historical duty and vowed to conduct a beneficial investigation to provide answers to the Turkish people. The committee has the right to conduct examinations at ministries, other governmental bodies, local administrations, universities, government business enterprises, banks and institutions. The committee was founded under the authority granted by a special law, and is also authorized to investigate professional organizations, including those with public institution status, and public interest groups, and it is expected to compile a report over a four-month period regarding its findings. The expected report from the committee will then be discussed in Parliament and published in both the Official Gazette.
