The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Istanbul (Fener Rum Patriarchate) recently decided to hold the annual ceremony of Saint Johannes on May 8 in İzmir from now on. May 8 is considered to be the anniversary of Saint Johannes's death and will be organized at Saint Jean Church in Selçuk, İzmir. Selçuk Mayor Zeynel Bakıcı said the decision of the patriarchate is important for the city's faith tourism and the decision will contribute to Selçuk's development. "Selçuk is an important place for Christians, as this place was used as a pilgrimage center nearly a thousand year ago. That is why the Fener Rum Patriarchate's decision makes us happy," Bakıcı said. Bakıcı also said "We are glad that UNESCO included Efes as a World Cultural Heritage Centre upon our request, and the news makes us happier. Our mission is now to host the guests who visit Selçuk to the best of our ability."
