Turkey wins 3 gold medals in European weightlifting contest

The Turkish Weightlifter National Team won five medals on Saturday - including three gold medal - in the European Weightlifting Championships being held in Georgia. Turkish athlete Sibel Özkan Konak, competing in the 48-kilogram weight class, won two gold medals in clean and jerk and total categories, and a bronze medal in snatch. Konak ranked first by lifting 99 kilograms in clean and jerk and 179 kilograms in total. She also snatched 80 kilograms, coming third. Konak won the Junior World Championship in 2005, the Senior European Championship in 2007, among other victories. The other Turkish athlete, Nurcan Taylan, competing also in the 48-kilogram class, won the gold medal in snatch and silver medal in total. Taylan snatched 81 kilograms. She lifted 97 kilograms in clan and jerk, coming fourth, while in total she was the runner-up with 178 kilograms. Nurcan Taylan, Turkey's first female weightlifter to win an Olympic gold medal in Athens 2004, holds six European and two world records, according to the Turkish Weightlifting Federation. The European Weightlifting Championships 2015 is being organized in Tbilisi, Georgia. Ninety-six women and 136 men from 38 countries are competing in the Senior European Championships which began on April 9 and will end on April 18.
